Due to their high energy density, lithium-ion batteries are some of the most popular on the market. With great power comes the potential for great damage, and when a powerful battery malfunctions -- you could end up with an explosion on your hands.

 

Counterfeit batteries, unauthorized replicas of real, tested and licensed products, are not certified in any dependable lab. That may not, unfortunately, prevent them from being advertised as the real deal.

 

The result can be a battery that doesn’t perform properly, and can damage your power tool and charger. In some cases, a poorly-built battery can experience a thermal runaway reaction, leading to fire and a potential explosion.

 

The first signs of a malfunctioning battery could include melted plastic on the case, or smoke and smoldering. These require immediate action.

 

If your battery is connected to a charger, unplug it first. Be careful not to physically touch the battery. Take precautions such as gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself.

 

A conventional fire extinguisher will not stop a thermal runaway reaction, and neither will pouring water over the battery or smothering it in sand. The best way to extinguish the reaction is to submerge the battery in a sturdy container full of water, at least 15 feet away from any combustible items. Safety guidelines recommend using a tool such as a long-handled shovel to pick up and move the battery.

 

Keep the battery submerged for at least 24 hours. Even if it appears to have cooled down before then, the thermal runaway reaction could still be active in some of its internal cells.
